The so-called Base of the Pyramid (BOP) consists of four billion low income consumers and small scale producers in key emerging markets such as India, China, Brazil but also Mexico, Ghana and Vietnam. An increasing number of companies are exploring the growth and innovation opportunities of BOP markets. At the same time, BOP ventures of most European MNCs are still early stage and resource allocation for high risk-long term ventures is challenging in times of economic downturn. Having said that, there are at least two reasons why BOP is a strategic necessity for European MNCs: 1. the size of the market and the innovation potential; 2. competitive threat: emerging market based companies are expected to introduce innovative BOP business models in ‘our’ top of the pyramid markets.

Services and track record
We support board members, sustainability managers and innovation managers to assess whether BOP should be on the management agenda, to align the BOP concept with business strategy and to identify promising BOP markets and business areas. We help BOP program managers to access selected BOP markets, to gain insight in local needs, to co-create BOP business models with local stakeholders and to get access to (external) capital to finance BOP ventures.

Recent engagements include a dialogue with 20 senior executives on the strategic relevance of BOP, a review of the BOP strategy and portfolio of a leading fast moving consumer goods company, the development of a BOP strategy and creation of a BOP business platform in a selected emerging markets for DSM, a BOP scenario planning session with five Dutch MNCs and the development of a co-created business model for a food company.
