SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Some claim that multinationals extract value from the developing countries in which they operate. That they extract money from local consumers and that they import goods and services from abroad. Reality is obviously more nuanced because companies create employment and make financial and non-financial investments in these countries. The private sector is crucial for development of countries. When companies operate in a responsible way they significantly contribute to the social-economic development of the country in which they operate.

Services and track record
With the Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA) this contribution can be scrutinized. A company obtains quantitative insight in, among others, the number of jobs it creates, its contribution to Gross Domestic Product and its influence on the country’s income distribution. Not only are the direct effects considered (within the company gate so to speak) but also the indirect effects (outside the factory fate: in the entire value chain and the local economy). Different scenarios can be analyzed, e.g. what would happen if the company were to relocate to another country or if the company were to increase its activities within the country.

Triple Value has ample experience in executing Socio-Economic Impact Assessments. For example, for Heineken we have completed projects for their operations in Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria and Greece.

Team
The Triple Value SEIA team consists of René Kim (partner) and Willem Ruster (consultant). We also work together with Prof. Ethan Kapstein of the INSEAD business school.

“The results of Triple Value’s SEIA have truly helped us to get better insights in the positive impact of our business on the country of Rwanda. Having this information also enabled us to enrich our conversations and dialogues with relevant stakeholders, notably the government.
